805 Movement Chaplains program

A movement chaplain is a trained practitioner of care who offers grounded, trauma aware spiritual and emotional accompaniment in movement spaces, such as vigils, direct actions, organizing meetings, and moments of crisis. Movement chaplains may serve in frontline roles, providing in person support during actions, or in backline roles, coordinating care, logistics, check ins, and follow up so no one carries the weight alone. They do not lead the action, control outcomes, or impose belief. They practice consent, confidentiality, and disability access, and they support people’s dignity, safety, grief, and resilience before, during, and after intense events.

Movement chaplaincy is rooted in solidarity with communities most targeted by harm by policing, and state violence. Movement chaplains follow the leadership of those most impacted and resist saviorism, so care strengthens collective liberation, healing and wellness rather than centering the chaplain.
